Happy Health Literacy Month!

Welcome and Happy Health Literacy Month! Health Literacy Month was founded by Helen Osbourne, M.Ed., OTR/L to bring awareness to the issue of health literacy and its affects on the population's health. My goal is to contribute to this increasing awareness and I am so happy that you are here to join me.

Did you know that it is estimated that 9 out of 10 people do not have the personal skill and resources to maintain good health. There are several factors that contribute to this, including basic literacy and numeracy skills, basic understanding of science and health, communication challenges such as English proficiency and hearing and vision deficiencies. Health literacy affects everybody and plays a major role in our ability to lead healthy lives.

If you're reading along and wondering if the information in this blog will be relevant to you, the answer is yes! Even the most health literate of us can, at times, find ourselves in a low health literate moment. It has happened to me and I bet it has happened to you before as well. Also, most, if not all, of us know someone who may need extra help managing their health. As we journey along, each month I will focus on health literacy strategies for specific groups of people who may face additional literacy deficiencies, while also sharing current news and policy changes in health literacy.

So I ask that you stick with me for this journey and if you learn something, subscribe and share it. If you find any of this information useful, share it with someone else who may need it. The goal is to help all of us, healthcare providers and consumers, to become more health literate so that we each will be able to live healthier, more abundant lives.
