Walking into 2017 like...

January 3, 2017

"I got this feeling inside my bones. It goes electric, wavey when I turn it on. All through my city, all through my home. We're flying up, no ceiling, when we in our zone." -Justin Timberlake, "Can't Stop the Feelin'"

Happy New Year my beautiful people! I pray you all have prosperity, success, health and that you receive all of the desires of your heart in 2017! I know a lot of us were completely over 2016, if you are one of those people, then I hope that 2017 is a complete change for you. If 2016 was good to you then I hope that 2017 is great to you. I personally can't say that 2016 was bad or good for me, if anything it was just bleh. I definitely had some wins: I completed my 2nd Master's degree, I started this blog, I joined a travel group and a blogging group which allowed me to meet so may new people and make some great new friends, I protective styled my way through the year and got some hair growth gains. And I definitely had some not wins: I got into 2 hit and run car accidents, after getting to probably the most fit I've ever been, I quit my fitness goals and lost all of my progress, I did not find a new job after putting in countless applications, and I dealt with a lot of self-doubt. Even so, I'm walking into 2017 feeling good!

As we begin this new year, I hope you have started putting forth your intentions and speaking good things into your life. I stopped making resolutions a few years ago and instead focused on making goals and vision boards.

To create my vision board, I start by using a goal generator to write down all of my goals for the year and then condense them down in my top 5 goals. I have it hanging in my home office and have a picture of it on my lock screen. It's all about being intentional folks.

Here are my  goals for 2017:

  1. Be Bold and take risks- I have always tended to make safe choices out of fear of disappointing those I care about. My desire to make my loved ones proud has always resulted in making me feel the need to be perfect. This year, I want to take healthy risks and let go of the need to be a "good girl" and instead live a life of no regrets.

  2. Read a book a month- I started this goal in 2016, but with school, an internship and a full time job, I found it to be too much. This year, I want to complete this goal. Reading has always been an important part of my life that I want to get back to. On the list so far: January- Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes; February- Jump by Steve Harvey; March- The 5 Love Languages Singles Edition by Gary Chapman.

  3. Try a new fruit or veggie each month- I am a somewhat picky eater, especially when it comes to fruits and veggies. But I have realized that there is a whole world of food out there that I haven't tried yet. As part of my goal to be healthier this year, I want to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet (take out some of my favorite carbs) and try new recipes.

  4. Start my career in Public Health- I have been looking for a new job for quite some time, specifically a career that will use my degree. I want to turn this blog into a side hustle business and find some financial stability in 2017.

  5. Commit to working out and stick to it- At the beginning of 2016, I was able to run 2 miles without stopping. That was a huge feat for me; between bad knees, a bad back and a lot of extra weight, running was always this intangible goal for me. Even with that success, I gave up and walked away from my trainer and gym. This year, I want to find my joy in exercise, try new things and commit to being healthier.

I can't wait to see where 2017 takes all of us! For me, I already have some amazing things lined up. Next month, I'm taking a trip to Costa Rica. In July, I'm taking a dream trip to Greece and hopefully Italy. In August, I'll be going to Toronto. October will bring my 30th birthday, and hopefully another awesome trip. And I brought in the new year with a promising job interview. Let's keep all of the positive vibes going!
